Let \(Y\) be an integral nondegenerate curve of degree \(d\) in \(\mathbb{P}^ n\) and \(X\) a ``ribbon'' around \(Y\), i.e. a one-dimensional subscheme of \(\mathbb{P}^ n\) of degree \(2d\) with \(X_{\text{red}} = Y\). \textit{D. Eisenbud} and \textit{J. Harris} proved [J. Algebr. Geom. 1, 15-30 (1992; Zbl 0804.14002)] that in characteristic zero, \(X \cap H\) is in linearly general position for a general hyperplane \(H\) of \(\mathbb{P}^ n\). In the paper under review this result is extended to positive characteristic. Here the result holds for ``general'' \(Y\) (e.g. for reflexive curves), but there exist exceptions. Explicit examples for such exceptions are constructed in which \(Y\) is a ``strange'' curve, i.e. there is a point in \(\mathbb{P}^ n\) which lies on all tangent lines to \(Y\).
