The paper deals with compact 3-manifolds \(M\) whose interiors admit complete hyperbolic structures (of infinite volume in general). For such a hyperbolic 3-manifold \(N=H^3/\Gamma\) homeomorphic to the interior of \(M\), \(\lambda_0(N)\) denotes the bottom of the \(L^2\) spectrum of the Laplacian, and \(d(N)\) is the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of Kleinian group \(\Gamma\subset \text{Isom} (H^3)\). Varying \(N\) over the Teichmüller space, one may define two geometric invariants \(\Lambda(M)\) as the supremum of \(\lambda_0(N)\), and \(D(M)\) as the infimum of \(d(N)\). The authors observe that \(\Lambda(M)=D(M)(2-D(M))\) if \(M\) is not a handlebody or a thickened torus. Also they characterize (in terms of the characteristic submanifolds of the incompressible core of \(M\)) those manifolds \(M\) for which \(\Lambda(M)=1\) or \(D(M)=1\).
