The classical Bochner theorem states that a complete Riemannian manifold with positive Ricci curvature has no square integrable harmonic one forms. Extensions of Bochner's theorem to manifolds where the Ricci curvature is bounded from below by a negative constant C were given by \textit{K. D. Elworthy} and \textit{S. Rosenberg} [Acta Appl. Math. 12, 1-33 (1988; Zbl 0677.58046)]. The author of this note proves similar results under weaker assumptions, making use of elementary estimates and of Kato's inequality.
