The author presents a sequence of results which show when for the given differential matrix system \(dx/dt=Ax\) there is a system \(dy/dt=By\) for which matrix \(B\) is similar to a diagonal matrix and arbitrary close to matrix \(A\), and norm of the difference \(x(t)-y(t)\) is arbitrary small for all \(t\geq 0\). The corresponding theorems for difference matrix systems, obtained by similar proof techniques, can be found by replacing \(\exp(At)\) with powers of matrices in the theorems. The author calls his results tracking theorems because \(y\) tracks \(x\). He considers some example and shows that for the case when an eigenvalue of the matrix \(A\) having maximum real part has a corresponding nonlinear elementary divisor the diagonal tracking result doesn't take place.
