The space \(S(G)\) of subgroups of a locally compact topological group \(G\) can be given a topology, called the Chabauty topology, with respect to which it is compact. Understanding this topology is in general nontrivial. The main result of the paper is a description of the space of subgroups of the group \(\mathbb R\times \mathbb Z\). This space is homeomorphic to a union of an infinite family of discs attached to the Hawaiian earrings. The author describes the attaching maps in detail. He also investigates the fundamental group of \(S(\mathbb R\times \mathbb Z)\) and proves that it contains a subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of the Hawaiian earrings.
