On a family of quartic Thue inequalities. II. (Q1969344)

For Part I, cf. ibid. 66, 70--84 (1997; Zbl 0884.11021). We give a method of estimation for rational approximation to algebraic numbers of degree 4 of the form \(\sqrt{(1+(s+\sqrt t)/N)}+\sqrt{(1+(s-\sqrt t)/N)}\) with \(s, t\in\mathbb Z\) and large \(N\in \mathbb N\). Our method is based on Padé approximation. As an application, we consider the Thue inequalities \(| x^4-a^2x^2y^2-by^4|\leq k(a, b)\), where \(a, b\in\mathbb N\) and \(k(a, b)\) is a function with positive values, and we give upper bounds for the solutions when \(a\) is larger than a certain constant depending on~\(b\).
