Let \(\gamma_t\), \(t \in [0,T),\) be a family of convex closed plane curves given by smooth immersions \(X_t= X(.,t) : S^1 \to \mathbb R^2,\) where \(S^1\) is the unit circle. The curves \(\gamma_t\) are said to evolve (contract) under the \(k^{\alpha}\) flow, where \(\alpha > 1\) is a constant, if \[ \frac{\partial X}{\partial t}\, (u,t)= \frac{1}{\alpha}\;k^{\alpha}(u,t) N(u,t)\quad \forall (u,t) \in S^1\times [0,t), \] where \(k(\cdot,t)\) is the curvature and \(N(.,t)\) is the unit normal vector of the curve of \(\gamma_t\). The aim of this interesting paper is to study the evolution under the above equation of a given smooth convex closed plane curve \(\gamma_0\) and study its asymptotic behavior. The curve \(\gamma_0\) may have self-intersections. It is shown that the blow-up rate of the curvature is always of type one and the rescaled solution will converge to a limit that may or may not be degenerate.
