In the framework of conical admissible Kähler metrics, the author proves that there exist extremal Kähler metrics in a given admissible class (conical or not) if and only if the modified K-energy is proper on the space of the associated potentials. This fact was conjectured by \textit{G. Tian} in the smooth case [Canonical metrics in Kähler geometry. Notes taken by Meike Akveld. Basel: Birkhäuser (2000; Zbl 0978.53002)]. Extremal Kähler metrics on admissible manifolds have been studied by \textit{V. Apostolov, D. M. J. Calderbank, P. Gauduchon} and \textit{C. W. Tønnesen-Friedman} [Invent. Math. 173, No. 3, 547--601 (2008; Zbl 1145.53055)]. In this article, the author extends this study to conical extremal metrics on admissible manifolds of the form \(\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{O}\oplus \mathcal{L}) \rightarrow S\), with a holomorphic line bundle \(\mathcal{L}\) over a manifold \(S\) covered by a product of constant scalar curvature Kähler manifolds. In particular, it is shown that there exists a conical extremal metric in any admissible Kähler class on \(\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{O}\oplus \mathcal{L}) \rightarrow \Sigma\), where \(\Sigma\) is a Riemann surface of genus greater than \(1\). It was known since \textit{C. W. Tønnesen-Friedman} proved it [J. Reine Angew. Math. 502, 175--197 (1998; Zbl 0921.53033)] that these manifolds have admissible Kähler classes with no extremal (smooth) Kähler metrics. The relation between lower boundedness of the K-energy, the infimum of the Calabi energy and the extremal polynomial is also discussed. In particular, the author gives an example where the modified K-energy is bounded from below but not proper.
