The paper under review has two parts. In the first part the author presents a different approach to the analysis of the spectrum of a compact surface of constant negative curvature. The main tool in this analysis is the Selberg trace formula. In the second part he investigates the application of the theory of Gibbs states to the analysis of Kleinian groups and their limit sets. The author's work is motivated by \textit{C. Series}' work on Fuchsian groups [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 1, 337-360 (1981; Zbl 0483.30029) and Acta Math. 146, 103-128 (1981; Zbl 0488.58016)].
