Let \(S=K[X_{1}, \ldots, X_{n}]\) be a polynomial ring over a field \(K\) and let \(\Delta\) be a simplicial complex on \(n\) vertices. The authors study the Stanley-Reisner ring \(K[\Delta]=S/I_{\Delta}\) of \(\Delta\), where \(I_{\Delta}\) is an ideal generated by all square-free monomials \(X_{i_{1}}\ldots,X_{i_{p}}\) such that \(\{i_{1}, \dots,i_{p}\}\notin \Delta.\) \textit{N. Terai} and \textit{K.-i. Yoshida} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 134, No. 1, 55--65 (2006; Zbl 1105.13027)] prove that Stanley-Reisner rings with large multiplicities are Cohen-Macaulay using Alexander duality. Precisely, if \(A=K[\Delta]\) has Krull dimension \(d\geq 2\) and the multiplicity \(e(A)\geq \binom {n}{c}-c\), where \(c=\text{codim} A\), then \(A\) is Cohen-Macaulay. The authors give also a direct proof of the previous theorem. The second main result concerns the case in which \(\Delta\) is pure. If \(A=K[\Delta]\) has Krull dimension \(d\geq 2\), \(\Delta\) is pure and the multiplicity \(e(A)\geq \binom{n}{c}-2c+1\), with \(c=\text{codim} A\), then \(A\) is Cohen-Macaulay. The authors provide, as an application of the previous result, sufficient conditions for \(K[\Delta]\) to be Buchsbaum. In the last section, several interesting examples are given to illustrate the results contained in the paper.
