A group \(G\) is said to be an \(n\)-dimensional orientable Poincaré duality group, in short \(PD_n\) group, if its cohomology and homology groups are related as in Poincaré duality for closed orientable manifolds of dimension \(n\). It is clear that the fundamental group of a closed orientable surface of genus greater or equal than 1 is a \(PD_2\) group, and the converse is true. Let \(M\) be a closed connected oriented smooth or topological 4-manifold with fundamental group a \(PD_2\) group, hence \(\pi_1(M)\cong\pi_1(F)\), where \(F\) is a closed oriented aspherical surface, that is \(F\simeq K(\pi,1)\). The author gives an explicit description of the group \(\Aut_*(M)\) of homotopy classes of homotopy self-equivalences of \(M\), preserving both the given orientation on \(M\) and a fixed base point \(x_0\in M\). Then he obtains a classification of such four-manifolds up to \(s\)-cobordism by using the modified surgery theory of \textit{M. Kreck} [Ann. Math. (2) 149, No.~3, 707--754 (1999; Zbl 0935.57039)].
