Let \(G\) be a group generated by a set of 3-transpositions, i.e. by a \(G\)- invariant subset \(D\) of \(G\) such that the order of \(ab\) is less than or equal to 3 for all \(a,b\in D\). The rank of \(G\) is the cardinality of \(D\). A subgroup \(H\) of \(G\) is said to be a \(D\)-subgroup if \(H = \langle D\cap H\rangle\), \(G\) is said to be an \(S_ 4\)-group if it contains no \(D\)- subgroup of order 18 or 54. \(G\) is said to be disconnected if it is a product of two element-wise commuting \(D\)-subgroups. The author associates with \(G\) an algebra \(L(G)\) over the field of order 2 having \(D\) as a basis with multiplication \[ a \times b = \begin{cases} 0, &\text{if \(ab = ba\)}\\ a^ b, &\text{if \(ab \neq ba\)}\end{cases}\;,\quad a,b\in D \] and proves that if \(G\) is a connected \(S_ 4\)-group of finite rank then \(G\) is finite and \(L(G)\) is a Lie algebra. \(L(G)\) is simple if and only if \((G/Z(G))'\) is simple. He also describes the structure of \(G/O_ 2(G)\) in the case when \(G\) is a connected \(S_ 4\)-group of finite rank.
