    Let \(D=\{z\in {\mathbb{C}}\), \(| z| <1\}\) and let A denote the Lebesgue area measure on \({\mathbb{C}}\). For a function \(f\in L^{\infty}(D,dA)\), the Hankel operator \(H_ f: L^ 2_ a(D)\to L^ 2_ a(D)^{\perp}\) is defined by \(H_ fg=(I-P)(fg),\) \(g\in L^ 2_ a(D)\), where \(L^ 2_ a(D)\) denotes the Bergman space and P is the orthogonal projection into \(L^ 2_ a(D).\) The author finds several necessary and sufficient conditions on the function f for the Hankel operator \(H_ f\) to be compact. Here is one of these conditions. Let \(\phi_{\lambda}(z)=(z-\lambda)/(1-z{\bar \lambda})\), z,\(\lambda\in D\). The Hankel operator \(H_ f\) is compact if and only if \(\| f\circ \phi_{\lambda}-P(f\circ \phi_{\lambda})\|_ 2\to 0\) as \(| \lambda | \to 1^-.\) The paper ends with some open questions about Hankel operators.
