It is shown that for every \(n\) the even and odd spectra of real symmetric Toeplitz (RST) matrices \(T_ n=(t_{r-s})^ n_{r,s=1}\) are interlaced if \[ t_ r={1 \over\pi} \int^ \pi_ 0 f(\theta) \cos r \theta d \theta,\;r=0,1,2,\dots, \] where \(f\) is monotonic and nonconstant. In order to formulate the problem the author first reviews some of the known results on the spectra of these matrices. The author is interested in conditions implying that the even and odd spectra of RST matrices are interlaced. His interest in this question stems from its connection with the inverse eigenvalue problem for RST matrices.
