By a greatest common divisor (GCD) theory on a partially ordered group \(G\) we mean an order-preserving homomorphism \(h\) of \(G\) into an abelian lattice-ordered group \(G\) such that for any pair \(a , b\) in \(G\), \(a = b\) if and only if the set of elements \(g\) in \(G\) whose images exceed \(a\) is the same as the set for the element \(b\) . In general a GCD theory is not unique. A GCD theory is complete if \(G\) is a complete \(l\)-group. Theorem 3.4 shows that a p.o. group admits a complete GCD theory if and only if it admits a GCD theory \(h\) with \(G\) an archimedean \(l\)-group. Also proved is the fact that a complete GCD theory is unique up to order isomorphism.
