For torsion-free groups \(G\) and regular rings \(R\), the Loday assembly map in algebraic \(K\)-theory \[ H_n(BG,K(R))\to K_n(R[G]) \] is conjectured to be an isomorphism. In general this is not the case; for example the map is not surjective if the Whitehead group of \(G\) is non-vanishing. In this short article, the authors use Quillen's calculation of the algebraic \(K\)-theory of finite fields and the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence to give examples of finite groups and finite fields, such that the assembly map is not injective. The non-injectivity of the assembly map for finite groups has been known by the experts, but before this no example had appeared in the literature.
