The authors investigate the rang of incidence matrices for affine and projective geometry over a finite field. First, they review and analyze the known formulas for the rank of the incidence matrices. Then, they obtain and discuss new such formulas for the projective geometry \(\mathrm{PG}_1(h,4)\) and the affine geometry \(\mathrm{EG}_1(h,4)\). A complete description for the systems of lines and points in \(\mathrm{EG}_1(h,4)\) is given.
