The research reported here comprises a detailed investigation of a special scenario-paradigm from the viewpoint of mathematical relativity and cosmology together. Two questions are explicitly posed regarding the global existence theorems: 1. Are there singular solutions satisfying initial conditions in the paradigm-A to the Einstein-matter equations in generic space-times? 2. Are there global solutions to the Einstein-matter equations with exponential potentials? These questions are discussed, taking as a model the bosonic action arising in low energy effective superstring (super-gravity) theory. The main purpose of the paper is to construct singular solutions satisfying conditions of paradigm-A and to provide a global existence theorem for Gowdy symmetric space times with stringy matter fields. In section 1, the action is introduced and the field equations are given. In section 2, initial singularities are considered. Three theorems are stated and explained. Global existence is discussed in the next section with a theorem and 19 lemmas. The final section is devoted to a number of comments. An appendix deals with local existence and uniqueness for smooth case.
