Let \(A\) be a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field \(K\). All modules considered are right finite dimensional. An indecomposable module \(M\) is called directing if \(M\) does not belong to an oriented cycle of nonzero nonisomorphisms between indecomposable \(A\)-modules. An \(A\)-module of dimension \(d\) over \(K\) can be treated as point in the variety of \(d\)-dimensional modules. This variety is equipped with an algebraic group action of the full linear group \(\text{Gl}(d)\) and the orbit \({\mathcal O}_M\) of \(M\) under this action consists of the points representing modules isomorphic to \(M\). The objective of the paper are geometric properties of the Zariski-closure \(\overline{{\mathcal O}_M}\) of \({\mathcal O}_M\). The main result, completing the results of \textit{G. Bobiński} and \textit{A. Skowroński} [J. Algebra 215, No. 2, 603-643 (1999; Zbl 0965.16009)], asserts that if \(A\) is of tame representation type and \(M\) is an indecomposable directing \(A\)-module, then \(\overline{{\mathcal O}_M}\) is a normal Cohen-Macaulay variety. An important step of the proof is degeneration to toric normal varieties using SAGBI-bases, [see \textit{A. Conca, J. Herzog} and \textit{G. Valla}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 474, 113-138 (1996; Zbl 0866.13010)].
