This paper is contribution to the study of `maps with a hole' or `open maps' for the doubling map \(T:[0,1]\to[0,1]\) sending \(x\) to \(2x\) modulo \(1\). Writing \(B(a,b)\) for the set of \(n\in\mathbb N\) with the property that every \(n\)-cycle under the action of \(T\) intersects the interval \((a,b)\), the authors describe completely the set of pairs \((a,b)\), \(0<a<b<1\), for which \(B(a,b)\) is finite or empty.
