This paper is concerned with criteria for the embeddability of a \(C^*\)- algebra into an AF algebra. Let \({\mathcal N}\) denote the class of all separable nuclear \(C^*\)- algebras, to which the universal coefficient theorem applies. It is proved that if A is a stably finite \(C^*\)-algebra in the class \({\mathcal N}\) and there is a closed two-sided ideal I in A, such that one of I, A/I is AF and the other is embeddable into an AF algebra, then A is embeddable into an AF algebra. Next it is proved that all separable \(C^*\)-algebras with continuous trace are embeddable into AF algebras. Finally it is shown that embeddability is a homotopy invariant for separable type I \(C^*\)-algebras. Every separable type I \(C^*\)- algebra, all of whose quotients are stably finite, turns out to be embeddable into an AF algebra.
