    Let \(\Omega \) be a bounded domain in \(\mathbb R^N,N\geq 2\) with a \(C^3\)-boundary. The paper deals with spike layer solutions to the problem \[ (P_{\epsilon})\quad \epsilon^2\Delta u-u+f(u)=0,\quad u>0\text{ on }\Omega,\quad \frac{\partial u}{\partial \nu}=0 \;\text{ on } \partial \Omega, \] where the function \(f\) is in \(C^0(\mathbb R).\) Let \(H\) be the mean curvature function on \(\partial\Omega.\) The existence of a compact set \(M\subset\partial\Omega\) and an open set \(O\supset M\) in \(\partial \Omega\), satisfying \(H(x)>H(y)\) for \(x\in M\) and \(y\in O\setminus M\), is assumed. Under supplementary conditions on \(f\) it is proved that there exists, for \(\epsilon\) sufficiently small, a solution \(u_{\epsilon}\) to \((P_{\epsilon})\) with a maximum point \(x_{\epsilon}\in \bar{\Omega}\) such that \(u_{\epsilon}(x)\leq C\, \exp(-\frac{c}{\epsilon}\text{dist}(x,x_{\epsilon}))\) for some constants \(C\), \(c\), and \(\underset{\epsilon\to 0}{\lim}\text{ dist }(x_{\epsilon},M)=0.\) The convergence, as \(\epsilon\to 0\), of a suitable transformed solution \(w_{\epsilon}\) of \(u_{\epsilon}\) to a radially symmetric least energy solution \(U\) to \[ \Delta U-U+f(U)=0,\quad U>0 \text{ in }\mathbb R^N_+,~\frac{\partial U}{\partial x_N}=0 \text{ on } \partial\mathbb R^N_+,\quad \underset{|x|\to\infty}{\text{ lim }}U(x)=0 \] is also investigated. The same problem was studied by the author when \(f\in C^1\) and \(N\geq 3\) in [J. Differ. Equations 244, No. 10, 2473--2497 (2008; Zbl 1148.35028)].
