The authors classify 5-dimensional Lie groups \(G\) with left-invariant Sasakian structure. The center \(Z\) of the group \(G\) has dimension \(0\) or \(1\). If the dimension of \(Z\) is one, then the quotient \(G/Z\) has a left-invariant Kähler structure and the Sasakian structure is obtained by contactization of the 4-dimensional homogeneous Kähler manifold \(G/Z\). The classification of such structures follows from\ the classification of left-invariant Kähler structures on 4-dimensional Lie groups, obtained by Ovando. If \(\dim Z =0\), the group \(G\) is locally isomorphic to \(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb R)\times \mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb R), \mathrm{SU}_2(\mathbb R) \times \mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb R)\), where \(\mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb R)\) is the non commutative 2-dimensional Lie group, or to a semidirect product \(\mathbb R^2 \times \text{Heis}_3\) of the Heisenberg group \(\text{Heis}_3\) and the vector group \(\mathbb R^2\) of its automorphisms. In all cases, the invariant Sasakian structure is described explicitly. The authors indicate also which of the groups admit a cocompact lattice and describe which invariant Sasakian structures are \(\alpha\)-Einstein.
