The author studies the convergence properties of a finite element method with lumping for the solution of linear one-dimensional reaction-diffusion problems on arbitrary meshes of the form \[ Lu:=-\varepsilon^2 u''+r^2u=f\quad\text{in }(0, 1),\quad u(0)=u(1)=0, \] where \(0<\varepsilon<<1\) and \(r(x)>\rho>0\) for \(x\in[0,1]\). Easily verifiable sufficient conditions are obtained for the convergence of the method in the \(L_\infty\) norm, uniformly in the diffusion parameter. Sharp estimates for the discrete Green function associated with the discretization are key to the present analysis. The stability of the discretization is established.
