The authors study initial and boundary value problems for a rather general class of ordinary differential equations in fixed-point form. Both the equations and the initial/boundary conditions may be implicit, nonlinear or contain discontinuities or depend functionally on the unknown function and its derivative. Using fixed-point theorems for mappings in partially ordered sets, the authors derive existence statements for extremal solutions of initial value problems for first- and second-order equations and of boundary value problems for second-order equations, respectively. Explicit solutions for a number of concrete examples are given.
