A complete answer to a problem of \textit{W. Ding, H. Fan} and \textit{J. Li} [Calc. Var. Partial Differ. Equ. 16, No. 3, 273--282 (2003; Zbl 1023.58007)] on the homotopy classes of harmonic Hopf constructions is given. As well, as an application to isoparametric gradient maps, there are provided several homotopically non-trivial harmonic maps between spheres.
