Let \(X\) be a Banach space and \(\mathcal{L}(X)\) be the set of all linear bounded operators on \(X\). An operator \(A\in\mathcal{L}(X)\) is called relatively regular if \(ABA=A\) for some \(B\in\mathcal{L}(X)\) which is called a \(g_1\)-inverse of \(A\). The set of all \(g_1\)-inverses of \(A\) is denoted by \(\mathcal{G}_1(A)\). The author introduces and studies the set \(\mathcal{D}(A)=\{B_1-B_2: B_1,B_2\in\mathcal{G}_1(A)\}\). In particular, it is shown that \(\mathcal{D}(A)=\{U-BAUAB:U\in\mathcal{L}(X)\}\), where \(B\in\mathcal{G}_1(A)\) is any given operator. An operator \(A\in\mathcal{L}(X)\) is invertible if and only if \(\mathcal D(A)=\{0\}\). A regular nonzero operator \(A\in\mathcal{L}(X)\) is right (left) invertible if and only if \[ \mathcal{D}(A)=\{C\in\mathcal{L}(X):AC=0\}\;(\text{resp., }\mathcal{D}(A)=\{C\in\mathcal{L}(X):CA=0\}). \] Some related results on Fredholm, simply polar and algebraic operators are also obtained.
