Consider a linear equation of the form \[ f^{(n)}+p_{n-1}(z)f^{(n-1)}+\dots+p_1(z)f=0, \] where \(p_0(z) (\not\equiv 0), p_1(z),\dots,p_{n-1}(z) (n\geq 2)\) are polynomials and are not all constants. The author gives a necessary and sufficient condition under which the equation admits a fundamental solution set \(\{f_1,\dots,f_n\}\) with the property that \(\lambda(f_k)<\rho(f_k)\) for all \(k=1,\dots,n.\) Here \(\rho(f)\) and \(\lambda(f)\) denote the order of growth of an entire function \(f\) and the exponent of convergence of its zeros, respectively. The condition is described in terms of coefficients of the \(p_j(z)\)'s \((j=0,1,\dots,n-1).\) Moreover results concerning \(\max_{1\leq j\leq n}\{\lambda(f_j)\}\) and \(\rho(f_1\dots f_n)\) are obtained.
