The authors investigate the advection upstream splitting method (AUSM) recently developed by \textit{M.-S. Liou} and \textit{C. J. Steffen jun.} [J. Comput. Phus. 107, No. 1, 23-39 (1993; Zbl 0779.76056)]. The shock resolution capability of the scheme is improved by switching from the AUSM flux to the van Leer flux at shock waves. Further improvements concern the computation of the entropy in the boundary layer. The authors report the usefulness of the modified scheme: hypersonic flows with very strong shocks and strong expansions were computed, which was until now not possible with flux difference splitting.
