Let \(X\) be a Banach space, let \(Y\) be a (closed) subspace of \(X\), and let \(\lambda\geq 1\). The pair \((X,Y)\) is said to have the \(\lambda\)-BCAP if, for each \(\lambda'>\lambda\) and each finite-dimensional subspace \(F\) of \(X\), there exists a compact operator \(u:X\rightarrow X\) such that \(\|u\|\leq \lambda'\), \(u(x)=x\) for every \(x\in F\), and \(u(Y)\subset Y\). The \(\lambda\)-BAP for \((X,Y)\) admits the same definition replacing compact operators by finite rank operators, and was introduced by \textit{T. Figiel, W. B. Johnson} and \textit{A. Pełczyński} in [Isr. J. Math. 183, 199--231 (2011; Zbl 1235.46027)]. The authors study the notion of BCAP of a pair and apply this notion to prove some results on the BCAP, obtaining compact analogues of some of the results of the mentioned paper of Figiel et al. For example, they show that, if \(X\) is an \(\mathcal{L}_\infty\)-space and \(Y\) is a closed subspace with the BCAP, then \(Y/X\) has the BCAP. Moreover, the dual \(X^*\) of a Banach space \(X\) has the \(\lambda\)-BCAP with conjugate operators if and only if the pair \((X,Y)\) has the \(\lambda\)-BCAP for each finite codimensional subspace \(Y\) of \(X\). They also prove that, if \(Y\) is a subspace of \(X\) with \(Y^\perp\) complemented in \(Y^*\) and \(X\) has the AP of order \(p\) or the BAP of order \(p\), then so does \(Y\).
