Let \({\mathcal A}_ n\) be the affine Weyl group of type \(\tilde A_{n-1}\). The author gives a geometric description of the two-sided cells of \({\mathcal A}_ n\) in terms of the nilpotent orbits in the Lie algebra \(sl_ n(\overline{{\mathbb{C}}(t)})\) by defining a map \(\phi_ 2: {\mathcal A}_ n\to \Lambda_ n\), where \(\overline{{\mathbb{C}}(t)}\) is the algebraic closure of \({\mathbb{C}}(t)\), t an indeterminate over \({\mathbb{C}}\), \(\Lambda_ n\) the set of partitions of n. He shows that \(\phi_ 2\) coincides with the map defined earlier by G. Lusztig in a combinatorial way. On the other hand, let \(\phi\) : \({\mathcal A}_ n\to {\mathcal A}_ n\) be the involution corresponding to a reflection of the extended Dynkin diagram which fixes a certain node. The author shows that the fixed elements in a two-sided cell of \({\mathcal A}_ n\) is finite if and only if the dual of the partition of n corresponding to the two-sided cell has distinct parts.
