It is a consequence of the Pontryagin duality theorem that for a locally compact Abelian group G, the mapping \(N\to N^{\perp}=\{\alpha \in \hat G\); \(\alpha | N=1\}\) is a bijection between the set of all closed subgroups N of G and the set of all closed subgroups of the dual group \(\hat G\) of G. The present paper deals with the existence of such a Galois correspondence for general locally compact groups G. A closed subset \(S\neq \emptyset\) of the dual space \(\hat G\) of G is called a subdual if for any two representations \(\pi\), \(\rho\in S\), the support of the tensor product \(\pi\) \(\otimes \rho\) (i.e. the set of all \(\rho\in \hat G\) which are weakly contained in \(\pi\) \(\otimes \rho)\) as well as the conjugate \({\bar \pi}\) belong to S. Denote by \({\mathcal N}_ G\) and \({\mathcal S}_ G\) the set of all closed normal subgroups of G and subduals of \(\hat G,\) respectively. The problem is to describe the image of the injective mapping \(\perp: N\to N^{\perp}=\{\pi \in \hat G\); \(\pi | N=1\}\) from \({\mathcal N}_ G\) into \({\mathcal S}_ G\). The author shows that it consists exactly of those subduals which are closed with respect to the weaker \(L^ 1\)-hull- \(\ker nel\) topology on \(\hat G.\) In particular, \(\perp ({\mathcal N}_ G)={\mathcal S}_ G\) if the usual and the \(L^ 1\)-hull-\(\ker nel\) topologies on \(\hat G\) coincide, i.e. if G is a so-called *-regular group. It should be noted that \(\perp ({\mathcal N}_ G)={\mathcal S}_ G\) implies that G is amenable, and that the reviewer [Math. Ann. 270, 1-15 (1985; Zbl 0536.22010)] has shown that \(\perp ({\mathcal N}_ G)={\mathcal S}_ G\) holds for a large class of locally compact groups, including all almost connected amenable groups.
