On the space \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R})\) one considers the operators \(D= -id/dx\) and \(M=\) the multiplication operator by the function \(x\). H. Weyl has dealt with the calculus specified by the formula \[ f_ W(D, M)= (2\pi)^{-1} \int_{\mathbb{R}^ 2} e^{i(\xi_ 1 D+ \xi_ 2 M)}\widehat f(\xi_ 1, \xi_ 2) d\xi_ 1 d\xi_ 2,\quad f\in {\mathcal S}(\mathbb{R}^ 2). \] The problem investigated by the authors is whether a positive constant \(c\) exists, with the property \(\| (f_ 1\otimes f_ 2)_ W (D, M)\|\leq c\| f_ 1\|_ \infty \| f_ 2\|_ \infty\), where \(f_ 1\), \(f_ 2\) belong to the Schwartz space \({\mathcal S}(\mathbb{R})\). Various special cases of the above inequality are investigated. It is shown, for instance, that the inequality is valid if \(f_ 1\) is the Fourier-Stieltjes transform of a finite, regular Borel measure on \(\mathbb{R}\). Connection with an unsolved problem stated by A. P. Calderon is emphasized. If the \(L^ 2\)-norm is substituted by different other norms (Banach function spaces), then the problem of validity of the inequality becomes more tractable.
