Let \((T_1,\dots,T_n)\) be an \(n\)-tuple of mutually commuting bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space \(H\). Then \(H\) has a structure of a \({\mathbb C}[z_1,\dots,z_n]\)-module if we define \(f\cdot\xi=f(T_1,\dots,f_n)\xi\), where \(f\in{\mathbb C}[z_1,\dots,z_n]\) and \(\xi\in H\). A Hilbert module \(H\) is called essentially normal if the cross-commutators \(T^\ast _jT_k-T_kT_j^\ast\) are all compact, and \(H\) is \(p\)-essentially normal if these commutators are in \(\mathcal L^p\), the Schatten-von Neumann class, \(1\leqslant p <\infty\). \textit{K.-Y. Guo} and \textit{K. Wang} in [Math. Ann. 340, No. 4, 907--934 (2008; Zbl 1148.47005)] proved that the closure \([I]\) in the Drury-Arveson space of a homogeneous principal ideal \(I\) in \({\mathbb C}[z_1,\dots,z_n]\) is essentially normal. The main result of the paper under review extends that theorem and reads as follows: {Theorem.} If \({\mathcal M}=[f]\) is the cyclic submodule of the Bergman space \(L_a^2({\mathbb B}_n)\) generated by an analytic polynomial \(f\in{\mathbb C}[z_1,\dots,z_n]\), then \(\mathcal M\) is \(p\)-essentially normal for \(p>n\), i.e., the commutators \(S_{z_j}^\ast S_{z_k}-S_{z_k}S_{z_j}^\ast\) are in the Schatten-von Neumann class \({\mathcal L}^p\) for \(j,k=1,\dots,n\), where \(S_{z_j}\) is the restriction of the multiplication operator \(M_{z_j}\) to \(\mathcal M\). The authors note that the same result holds true for modules generated by polynomials with vector-valued coefficients.
