The main goal of the article is to generalize the Nahm transform of solutions of Hitchin's equations on a \(2\)-dimensional torus \(T^2\) to solutions of Hitchin's equations on a Riemann surface \(\Sigma\) of genus \(g\geq 2\). More precisely it is proven that the Nahm transform of an irreducible solution of Hitchin's equations of rank at least \(2\) over a Riemann surface \(\Sigma\) of genus \(g\geq 2\) is a Hermitian vector bundle \(\hat{\mathcal{E}}\rightarrow J^{\text{v}}\times H^0(K_{\Sigma})\) equipped with a hyperholomorphic unitary connection \(\hat\nabla\), \(J^{\text{v}}\) denoting the dual to the Jacobian of \(\Sigma\), and, furthermore, the holomorphic structure induced by \(\hat\nabla\) on \(\hat{\mathcal{E}}\) with respect to a product complex structure on \(J^{\text{v}}\times H^{0}(K_\Sigma)\) extends to a holomorphic bundle over \(J^{\text{v}}\times\mathbb{P}(H^{0}(K_{\Sigma})\oplus\mathbb{C})\). This interesting paper gives a contribution for completing the picture for the Nahm transform of Higgs bundles on Riemann surfaces, since the genus \(0\) case was already considered by \textit{S. Szabo} [Mem. Soc. Math. France, in press] and the genus \(1\) case by \textit{M. Jardim} [Comm. Math. Phys. 225, 1--15 (2002; Zbl 1010.53027) and J. Geom. Phys. 52, 313--327 (2004; Zbl 1078.53017)]. However, while in the genus \(0\) and \(1\) cases the authors were forced to consider singular Higgs bundles (since there are no smooth Higgs bundles over surfaces of genus \(0\) and \(1\)), in the present article only smooth Higgs bundles are considered, so that, as just pointed out by the authors, an interesting sequel of the paper would be the construction of the Nahm transform for singular Higgs bundles over surfaces of genus at least \(2\).
