The paper presents a general adaptive algorithm that can be used to solve two-dimensional electrostatic inclusion problems in the presence of strong inhomogeneity, thin bridges, and narrow necks. Composite materials with a periodic geometry are considered, the material's geometry is given in a unit cell which is periodically repeated to cover the entire plane. The analysis of the speed and accuracy of the method is presented on seven numerical examples, some of which involve inclusions of complicated shapes and large random systems and are new.
