Let $A$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, not necessarily containing a field. The paper under review proves some interesting vanishing results for local cohomology modules of $A$ with support in ideals associated to matrices with entries in $A$. Specifically, one of the main results of the paper is the following: Theorem. Let $A$ be as above and $\mathfrak{a}$ be the ideal generated by the $t$ minors of a matrix of size $m \times n$ with entries in $A$. If $1 \leq t \leq \min\{m,n\}$, $t$ differs from at least one of $m$ and $n$, and $\dim (A) < mn$, then $H^{mn-t^2+1}_{\mathfrak{a}} (A) =0$. Analogues theorems are proved for ideals of Pfaffians of alternating matrices and ideals of minors of symmetric matrices. The main result extends greatly work by \textit{C. Huneke} et al. [J. Algebra 322, No. 9, 3194--3211 (2009; Zbl 1186.13016)]. The techniques behind the proofs rely on the theory of $\mathcal{F}$-modules and, respectively, $\mathcal{D}$-modules, developed here in the graded setting.
