The authors study the character contractibility of the Lebesgue--Fourier algebra \({\mathcal L}A(G)\) of a locally compact group \(G\). The Lebesgue--Fourier algebra, introduced by \textit{F. Ghahramani} and \textit{A.T.M. Lau} [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 133, 357--371 (2002; Zbl 1010.46048)], is the intersection of the convolution group algebra \(L^1(G)\) and the Fourier algebra \(A(G)\). It is a Segal algebra with respect to the natural norm \(\|f\|_1 + \|f\|_{A(G)}\). Moreover, when equipped with the pointwise multiplication, \({\mathcal L}A(G)\) is also an abstract Segal algebra in \(A(G)\). On the other hand, character contractibility was introduced recently by \textit{Z. Hu}, \textit{M. S. Monfared} and \textit{T. Traynor} [Stud. Math. 193, 53--78 (2009; Zbl 1175.22005)]. The authors show that \({\mathcal L}A(G)\) with the convolution product is character contractible (with respect to any or all characters) if and only if \(G\) is compact and that \({\mathcal L}A(G)\) with the pointwise product is character contractible (with respect to any or all characters) if and only if \(G\) is discrete.
