The authors study Hamilton's Ricci flow \[ \frac{d}{dt}g(t)=-2\operatorname{Ric}(g(t)) \] for left-invariant metrics in two classes of generalized flag manifolds with two isotropy summands, namely, \[ \mathrm{SO}(2m+2k+1)/U(m)\times \mathrm{SO}(2k+1)\text{ and } \mathrm{Sp}(m+k)/U(m)\times \mathrm{Sp}(k), \] from a qualitative viewpoint. They use a method called Poincaré compactification. Their main result is the following theorem. Let \(g_0\) be an invariant metric in one of the manifolds above. There are regions \(R_1\), \(R_2\), \(R_3\) and lines \(\gamma_1\), \(\gamma_2\) with \(\gamma_j=\partial R_j\cap\partial R_{j+1}\), \(j=1, 2\), such that (a) if \(g_0\in R_1\cup R_2\cup\gamma_1\), then \(g_\infty\) is a Einstein (non-Kähler) metric; (b) if \(g_0\in\gamma_2\), then \(g_\infty\) is a Kähler-Einstein metric; (c) for \(g_0\in R_3\), consider the natural fibration \(G/H\to G/K\) from the flag manifold to a symmetric space; then, the Ricci flow starting at \(g_0\) evolves in such a way that the diameter of the base of this fibration converges to zero as \(t\to\infty.\)
