The author studies the minimizing solutions of the following equation in \(\mathbb{R}^3\) \[ -\Delta u+u+\lambda\left(u^2*\frac{1}{|x|}\right)u=|u|^{p-2}u \] when \(\lambda\rightarrow 0\) and for \(p\in[2,6]\). This is a continuation of his previous work [Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 15, No. 1, 141--164 (2005; Zbl 1074.81023)] in which the value \(p=18/7\) turns out. It is shown to be connected to the Coulomb energy space \[ E=\{u\in L^6(\mathbb{R}^3),\;\nabla u\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^3),\;\int_{\mathbb{R}^3} \int_{\mathbb{R}^3}\frac{u^2(x)u^2(y)}{|x-y|}<\infty\}. \] A striking result of this paper is to show that \(p=18/7\) is a lower critical value for the inclusion of the radial Coulomb energy space in \(L^p(\mathbb{R}^3\)). As a consequence, for \(p\in(18/7,3)\) the author proves (with a change of scaling) the convergence of radial minimizers of the problem towards the set of radial minimizers solution of \[ -\Delta v+\left(v^2*\frac{1}{|x|}\right)v=|v|^{p-2}v \] with the Coulomb topology. The non-radial case is examined as well and leads to different results: the inclusion \(E\subset L^p(\mathbb{R}^3)\) holds for \(p\in[3,6)\) and not for \(p<3\). Finally, as a first approach towards generality, the author shows a breaking of symmetry of minimizers for the problem on a ball with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
