Let \(X\) be a nonempty connected set. Let \(X_i\subset X\) be nonempty and \(u_i:X_i \to X\) be bijective maps for \(i=1,\ldots,m\), \(m\geq 1\). Suppose that \(X=\bigcup_{i=1}^{m} u_i(X_i)\), \(\text{int} u_i(X_i) \cap \text{int} u_j(X_j) = \emptyset\) for \(i\neq j\), where \(\text{int}\) stands for topological interior. Given a Banach space \(Y\), bounded maps \(\lambda_i:X_i\to {Y}\) and bounded functions \(S_i:X_i\to \mathbb{R}\), \(i=1,\ldots,m\), the question arises when a fractal interpolation function \(f:X\to Y\), satisfying the self-referential formula \[ f\circ {u_i}=\lambda_i + S_{i} \cdot f|{X_i}, i=1,\ldots,m, \] can be found within a desired function space. The function spaces of interest include: Lebesgue, Sobolev, Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. The method of proof is a careful examination of the Read-Bajactarević operator (which plays the same role in fractal interpolation as the Hutchinson operator in the setting of general iterated function spaces; recall that graphs of fractal interpolation functions are attractors of particular iterated function systems). The appearance of Zygmund spaces is worth noticing.
