The paper addresses from the mathematical point of view the properties of elliptic genera of Calabi-Yau manifolds and studies elliptic genera of toric varieties. It is shown that for Calabi-Yau manifolds the Euler characteristic as defined in the paper is a Jacobi form of weight \(0\) and index \(d/2\) where \(d\) is the dimension of the manifold. The authors show that if the dimension of the manifold is greater than 12 the behaviour of the elliptic genus in the mirror correspondence can not be deduced from the behavior of the Hodge numbers. In section 3 they consider elliptic genera of toric varieties. By restricting the elliptic genus to \(y = -1\) yields a formula for the elliptic genus as studied by Landweber-Stong-Ochanine and Witten. Comparison of these series with standard expressions in terms of Eisenstein series yields identities. In the last two sections a relationship between elliptic genera of a \(d\)-dimensional Calabi-Yau hypersurface in a Fano toric variety and its mirror is derived. In section 5 it is shown that the elliptic genus of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface with Gorenstein singularities is a weak Jacobi form.
