The authors consider a one-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system with a Hamiltonian of the form \[ H=H_0(x,y)+\mu\epsilon^{\eta}H_1\left(x,y,t/\epsilon,\epsilon\right), \] where \[ H_0(x,y)=y^2/2+V(x), \] \(V(x)\) is either a polynomial or a trigonometric polynomial, and the perturbation is fast and periodic in time. It is assumed that \(\epsilon\) is a small parameter while \(\mu\) is not necessarily small. The authors show that the exponentially small splitting of separatrices has the asymptotics \(K\epsilon^{\beta}\exp(-a/\epsilon)\) and show how to identify the constants \(K,\beta,a\). They also mention that the values \(K\) and \(\beta\) are not always properly predicted by the well-known Melnikov theory.
