The unique solvability of a coupling problem for entire functions that arises in inverse spectral theory for singular second-order ordinary differential equations or two-dimensional first-order systems with trace resolvents is established. The coupling problem is relevant, for instance, for the study of certain completely integrable nonlinear wave equations when the underlying isospectral problem has purely discrete spectrum.
