When a separable, locally compact group \(G\) acts properly, smoothly, and isometrically on a connected, \(G\)-compact, complete Riemannian manifold \(X\), and when \(D\) is an invariant elliptic pseudodifferential operator on \(X\), \textit{G. G. Kasparov} [Sov. Math., Dokl. 27, 105--109 (1983; Zbl 0526.22007)] constructs for \(D\) an analytic index that lives in the \(K\)-theory of \(C^{*}G\). The paper under review provides a general construction, one application of which is the generalization of this result to the definition of an analytic index for a continuous equivariant family of operators of the kind studied by Kasparov. The index is an element of the \(K\)-theory of a groupoid \(C^{*}\)-algebra defined by the action. The author discusses the relationship between his construction and many of the other manifestations of groupoids in index theory.
