A cover \(\mathcal{U}\) of a set~\(X\) is large if each element of~\(X\) is in infinitely many members of~\(\mathcal{U}\); an \(\omega\)-cover if each finite subset of \(X\) is in a member of~\(\mathcal{U}\); a \(\tau\)-cover if it is large and either \(\{U:x\notin U\ni y\}\) or \(\{U:y\notin U\ni x\}\) is finite whenever \(x\neq y\); and a \(\gamma\)-cover if it is infinite and each element of~\(X\) is in all but finitely many members of~\(\mathcal{U}\). The statement \(\roman{Split}(\mathfrak{U},\mathfrak{V})\) (for classes of covers) states that each member of~\(\mathfrak{U}\) can be split into two covers, each of which contains a member of~\(\mathfrak{V}\) [\textit{M. Scheepers}, Topology Appl. 69, No. 1, 31--62 (1996; Zbl 0848.54018)]. The author surveys and investigates the interrelations between the 16 statements one obtains when pairing the four properties above, where he considers clopen, open and Borel covers, respectively. He also investigates the behaviour of the splitting properties under unions of spaces, taking subspaces and products.
