Let \(V\) be a quaternionic Banach space and \(T:D(T)\subset V \to V\) a linear closed and densely defined operator. One defines the \(S\)-resolvent operator of \(T\) as \(S^{-1}(s,T)=-(T^2-2Re[s]+|s|^2 \ell)^{-1}(T-\overline{s}\ell).\) The \(S\)-resolvent set of \(T\) is \(\rho_{S}(T)\), the set of all those \(s\in \mathbb{H}\) for which the resolvent operator exists and is bounded. The complement \(\sigma_S(T)=\mathbb{H}\setminus \rho_{S}(T)\) is the \(S\)-spectrum of \(T\). Denote by \(\mathbb{S}\) the unit sphere of purely imaginary quaternions. Let \(U\subseteq \mathbb{H}\) be an open set and let \(f:U\to \mathbb{H}\) be a real differentiable function. For \(I\in \mathbb{S}\), let \( f_{I}\) be the restriction of \(f\) to \(U\cap L_{I}\), where \(L_{I}=\mathbb{R}+I\mathbb{R}\) is the complex line passing through \(1\) and \(I\). The function \(f\) is called slice left regular if \(\tfrac{1}{2}(\partial /\partial x+\partial/\partial y) f_{I}(x+Iy)=0.\) Right regularity is defined similarly. The main results of the paper give a functional calculus for unbounded operators on \(V\). For instance, a part of Theorem 3.14 says the following. Let \(W\) be an open set such that \(\sigma_{S}(T)\cup \{ \infty\}\subset W\) and let \(f\) be a regular function on \(W \cup \partial W\). For \(I\in \mathbb{S}\), let \(W_{I}=W\cap L_{I}\). Assume that \(\partial W_{I}\) consists of a finite number of rectifiable Jordan curves and let it be positively oriented. Then \[ f(T)=f(\infty)\ell+\tfrac{1}{2\pi}\int_{\partial W_{I}} S^{-1}(s,T)\,ds_{I}f(s). \]
