The author discusses a model for a composite quantum mechanical system in which the set of observables is represented by the set \(V\) of self- adjoint operators of the form \(A_ 1\otimes A_ 2\) acting on the tensor product \(H_ 1\otimes H_ 2\) of Hilbert spaces \(H_ 1\) and \(H_ 2\) such that \(A_ 2\) commutes with elements of the range of a projection- valued measure on the positive integers, and the set of states is represented by the set \(R\) of positive trace-class operators of trace one on \(H_ 1\otimes H_ 2\). He defines a set \(W\) of variables and a set \(S\) of superselection states along with a mapping from \(W\times S\) to \(\mathbb{R}\) representing the expectation value. He shows that there is a bijection from \(W\) to \(V\) and a surjection from \(R\) to \(S\) which, taken together, preserve the expectation. He goes on to prove a result the physical significance is said to be that the states created in each superselection sector are partial states of the superselection states.
