The authors obtain some new Opial-type discrete inequalities involving higher order forward differences. In Section 2, many new discrete inequalities involving higher order differences of one given function are proved which yield discrete analogues of some integral inequalities obtained by the same authors in J. Math. Anal. Appl. 189, No. 1, 85-103 (1995). Related results due to \textit{J.-D. Li} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 167, No. 1, 98-110 (1992; preceding review)] and \textit{B. G. Pachpatte} [Demonstr. Math. 19, 281-291 (1986; Zbl 0626.26004)] are generalized by the results given in Section 2. Many similar discrete inequalities involving two given functions are considered in the second half of the paper (Section 3). The results shown in the paper are interesting but too long to be cited here in detail. We only point out that a typical inequality of the paper takes the form \[ \sum^{r- 1}_{i= 0} q(i) \prod^ n_{k= 0} | \Delta^ k x(i)|^{r_ k}\leq K\left\{ \sum^{r- 1}_{i= 0} p(i)| \Delta^ n x(i)|^ r\right\}^ m, \] where \(m= (r_ 1+ \cdots+ r_ n)/r\), \(r> 1\) and \(r_ 1,\dots, r_ n\) are real numbers subject to some conditions, \(p(i)> 0\) and \(q(i)\geq 0\) are real-valued functions defined on the discrete interval \([0, \tau- 1]:= [0, 1,\dots,\tau- 1]\), \(x(i)\) is a real-valued function defined on the discrete interval \([0, \tau+ n- 1]\) such that \(\Delta^ k x(0)= 0\) for \(0\leq k\leq n- 1\), and \(K= K(p, q, r_ 1,\dots, r_ n,r)\) is an appropriate nonnegative real constant.
