Classical results [\textit{S. W. Hawking} and \textit{G. F. R. Ellis}, The large scale structure of space-time (1973; Zbl 0265.53054)] about black holes are re-proved in more general space-times than the weakly asymptotically simple, empty ones. The original results depended on the assumption of future asymptotic predictability, which is a formulation in asymptotically flat space-times of Penrose's cosmic censorship. This has been refined to come now in two versions, strong and weak. This paper assumes the strong form and proves various of the Hawking results from it; e.g. it is proved that the surface area of a black hole cannot decrease with time.
